We’re always busy around here, but Active Aging Week was extra full of fun group activities. This year’s theme was Inspiring Wellness. Now, that’s a theme we can all get on board with. This is more about the week from the Active Aging Week website:
Active Aging Week takes place each year during the last week of September. The weeklong campaign calls attention to and wholeheartedly celebrates the positivity of aging today. It showcases the capabilities of older adults as fully participating members of society and spotlights the role models that lead the way.
Monday – Pet Pageant
We started the week off with a Pet Pageant. We like showing off our pets almost as much as we like showing off our grandchildren.
Tuesday, Volunteer for ABCCM!
Every year, Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry provides Christmas for families in crisis. They try to alleviate hardships and bring joy to those in need. One way they do this is with their Christmas Angel program. Individuals and groups in the community provide gifts for children whose ages and sizes are listed on angels hung on Christmas trees in public places.
Well, did you ever wonder how all of those angels were cut out? It turns out that volunteers do the honor. Let’s just say our fingers were a little tired, but we had a great time!
Wednesday, Taking Photos with Your Smartphone
Our residents are techies! We had a technical Q&A about how to use all those smart phone camera features. It was great to see the beautiful photos. We also have an Instagram account now, so we hope our residents will share their quick shots with us #hinthint. We also showed them how to make a selfie station and they all ducked out when we pressed the shutter button.

Thursday, Movie Musical Sing-a-Long
We have to admit that this reminds us of a blog from earlier this year. We asked our residents about their favorite movies in the Movie Nostalgia blogpost. The overwhelming winner was The Sound of Music so it’s no surprise that our residents like to singalong to music from movies.
Friday, Cookie Baking Competition
This has Kari Schrader written all over it! Our Community Life Services Director loves baking. We’re drooling just looking at photos of the cookies. Our facilities team had the honor of judging all entries and were very full when they named Mrs. Zimmerman this year’s winner.
We celebrate active aging all the time, so we’ll keep it up and get ready for next year.
