Retirement can change many things in your life – hopefully for the better! You have more free time, you’re able to relax and have less responsibilities. As all of these aspects are shifting in your life, you may find yourself re-thinking how you will be celebrating the holidays.
While a move to a retirement community is certain to change some family traditions, it can be a great time to reconsider the things your family has been doing for years. The holiday time is stressful enough, so this can present an opportunity to eliminate “stuff” and truly value each other’s presence, spending more time together rather than lose time by all of the typical holiday to-do lists.
By trying new things as you launch into this new chapter in your life, you may find new traditions that will last for years to come!
Here are some ideas to make your holiday season the best yet – even if it looks a little different:
- If your loved one is willing and able, consider planning a festive outing. Many communities do a light show in the evenings or holiday plays at a local theater. Consider attending a local show or as simple as taking a drive to see home holiday decorations while jamming out to holiday tunes!
- Prioritize the traditions that can continue: whatever those really important traditions are like baking treats, prepping for a special dinner or even little outings…think outside of the box to find a way to keep them! Invite your loved one over to your home for holiday baking or invite them out for those Black Friday Sales! Even if you cannot make every important tradition happen, think through the most important ones to make happen this year.
- Value the presence of family: the holidays are the perfect time to spend together, bringing family together from all over the country to visit. Place a priority on being together, valuing each other’s company by watching holiday movies, playing board games, or enjoy a nice evening out for dinner.
- Participate in community events: don’t forget to check in with your loved one’s retirement community! They are sure to have planned really fun and engaging activities throughout the season. It could include anywhere from ornament making to caroling and special meals. This is a great way for your loved one to socialize! Plus, having you involved with holiday events can help your loved ones feel at home.
Celebrate the holidays with us!
Like many residential senior living facilities, Ardenwood’s does a wonderful job of creatively integrating holidays memories in a safe yet meaningful way! Last year, their Community Life Services Director, Kari, and her team pulled off a delightful feat. A riddle was shared on our activities calendar and throughout the month, activities and surprises were planned corresponding to a different gift given during the Twelve Days of Christmas! We’re excited to celebrate another holiday season with our residents!
